What year and engine code?
Did you fit a new genuine sensor?
Maybe a wiring fault between sensor & ECU.

What fuel are you using?
Try putting non-supermarket fuel in (eg Shell, Esso) and see if it improves. Quite a lot of running faults can be caused by crap supermarket fuel.
I know 'proper' fuel costs more than supermarket stuff but you'll get better mpg so it often isn't actually any more expensive - my Audi does 28mpg on Tesco, 32mpg on Shell standard and 34mpg on VPower.....

Didn't some of the mk4s have issues with camshafts??

*EDIT* Also mate, we could do with you answering some of the other q's that have been asked in the thread, could help with diagnosing the fault.

As far as I know it was only the PD turbo diesels that have an appetite for eating camshafts.....

Take it that it was the crank position sensor that you replaced? If so worth taking it out and checking the trigger wheel for damage or debris whilst someone rotates the engine by hand. Also if the engine also has a cam position sensor (not all do) it's worth checking the cam belt side of things... it the belt's gone slack it can cause the timing to be out a bit but I've only ever seen that happen on a Vauxhall Ecotec engine.... They eat both sensors! But on one I got involved with the cam belt being slack caused a code to be logged sometines saying cam/crank sensors out of phase
